Banff Centre Talks: Maggie MacDonald
As a NGO campaigner, but also a musician and playwright, Maggie MacDonald has one foot firmly planted in the world of making activism possible, while the other stands in the dreamworld of theatrical collaboration, that creates art out of the impossible. While the fields may seem disparate, in both MacDonald approaches and explores the same questions about community, environment, and human values. The acclaimed writer, artist, and activist shares stories and insights about leading change and creating art over the course of her chimeric career.

Indigenous Knowledge and Western Science: Contrasts and Similarities Panel Discussion

Nice talk, Rob! It's a big challenge to explain elements of physics and astronomy, cosmology, and solar system evolution to a general audience, in such a way that you actually connect with them, and they feel that they've caught what you're getting at. You hit a nice note; I hope the attendees at that event enjoyed it.

A rambling incoherent lecture that absolutely did not "resonate" with me. Given that Indigenous Knowledge is so valuable, and that elders maintain that a person who abuses drugs and alcohol cannot hold traditional knowledge, why of why do so many young natives gravitate to the downward spiral substance use? I'm willing to consider the evidence that Native Science is not an oxymoron; alas Dr. Gregory Cajete hasn't proved diddly-squat. How, for instance, would natives know about fractals? Fractals can only be seen throught the aid of powerful computers - technology they have appropriated from the White Man. How can star gazers contribute to modern Astronomy if they never invented a telescope?

I agree with some points and disagree with others. I think science absolutely needs lots of perspectives and ways of understanding it, but to say that scientists haven't found anti particles for known particles yet because they don't deal with the notion of spirit kind of doesn't make any sense. If anyone knows how that makes sense please let me know because I am a little confused. Is it a metaphorical spirit or a literal one, because if it is a literal one, spirits aren't real and have little to no place in scientific discussion.

Western science yes is based on hypothesis, and reductionism. That is fine for an inquiring mind. But does this justify spending billions of dollars on supercolliders to find that “unified field”. What is being referred to as Indigenous Science is about resonance with the world around and within us, and how that relates to sustainability and balance. Which one might be most beneficial for our planet, for all the entities who live here in a tapestry of interdependence, and for us humans.

Equating anima "spirituality" with quantum physics is more than "a little bit off the rocker". Native's may have looked to the sky wondering why the Thunder God was apparently mad at them, however comma, to assert that they ever came up with an answer is frankly absurd. Pre-historic man was astute enough to be awed about the motion/flux of nearly everything in nature, but that didn't make him Einstein as Mr Little Bear would have you believe. Utter hogswallop.

There is no technology without science but there is science without technology. Einstein's work shows gravity is not a force, it is matter following the geometry of space. Like so much of what you do, this is my least favorite talk from you. Math was fundamental to Einstien not secondary, was the one subjects his entire life he aced, language was what he struggled with. This does not change Indigenous culture/science has true value and produces facts on par with Western Science. I am just passionate about physics and don't think you mean to misinform but unfortunately have on a couple points.

Read: Bruno Latour - We Have Never Been Modern. You'll find that the practice of science is heavily influenced by a network of "social" factors (Latour avoids the use of abstractions like 'culture' and 'social', which you might like). There are a myriad of ontological assumptions in science, the most evident being the subject-object divide which is absent in indigenous knowledge. The subject-object relation is deterministic of the functions and interests of so-called "objective" science. I hope you will read into this because it's crucial to separate ourselves from the assumptions of Cartesian-influenced enlightenment, rather than to separate mind and body; self and other.

If a person is of English heritage, they should expand knowledge by looking for tree spirits. If Norwegian, they should expand their knowledge by discussing trolls. The behavior of quantum particles does not transfer to macro behaviors - every physicist knows this. Sincerity and the desire to value First Nations people does not mean you should bring folkish ideas into science teaching. You are leading OISIE students to ignorance. Oh, if reality were so simple, we'd have it all figured out. Science is useful, but not authoritative on all life and knowledge. The scientific method is very good at getting us focused, empirical evidence, but very limited at getting a broad view on reality and how the world works. Perhaps try reading Nietzsche, Khun, and McPherson (Native American philosophy) to get what I mean. UA-cam argumentation can be trite. Littlebear's argument is that there are different ways to get to truths, and that western science is currently tunnel visioning (and look at the state of our natural ecosystems... we are fucking things up even with all this great technological science).

@@DarthAlphaTheGreat Indigenous knowledge functions in a similar way but built on thousands of years of trial and error in isolated situations and geographic regions. Your idea of truth is resting on an assumption of stagnant unchanging 'being', while missing the idea that things change ie. 'becoming'. Truth for being doesn't entail truth for becoming. @ACofOntario's suggestion to read more, I have to agree with, especially Nietzsche who addresses 'becoming' and how truth relates when you factor in change, as opposed to frozen, isolated concepts. The Eskimo and Inuit people don't have 50 words for snow because its fun. The Sto:lo's knowledge on floods along the Fraser River does't exist by accident. The examples are endless, and there is no way western science could come to the same knowledge or comprehensive understanding without the input of indigenous people. Try a different perspective bud, yours is only one.

From the conversations I've had with "experts in Science" is their real disjointed relationship to everything. Our current climate crisis is a direct result of linear, not causal thought.
